Apple announced on Friday the availability of Time Capsule and AirPort Base Station Update 7.4.1. The update, which includes bug fixes and security patches, can be applied to all AirPort Extreme Base Stations with 802.11n, AirPort Express Base Stations with 802.11n, and Time Capsules.

The update adds functionality for remote administration and access to USB-connected drives via Back to My Mac to owners of older units. The capabilities were introduced in the new models that were released this week. In addition, the update also brings improved reliability for backing up to Time Capsules using Time Machine.

Meanwhile, the new models of AirPort Extreme and Time Capsules get a fix for computers getting disconnected when waking from sleep and an issue that could cause the disabling of IP-layer networking as well as improved reliability of Back to My Mac’s disk sharing.

All models get security fixes as well. Apple’s security announcement on the update notes three particular vulnerabilities that have been patched: one that helps prevent a denial of service attack, and two that prevent a user from causing unexpected device shutdowns (one for a local network user, the other for a remote user).

The update is available via Apple’s AirPort Utility application. You’ll have to be running at least Windows XP SP2 or Mac OS X 10.4, and Apple recommends using AirPort Utility 5.4.1, which was also released earlier this week.
