SubnetCalc

Posted on  by

ipcalc takes an IP address and netmask and calculates the resulting broadcast, network, Cisco wildcard mask, and host range. By giving a second netmask, youcan design subnets and supernets. It is also intended to be a teaching tooland presents the subnetting results as easy-to-understand binary values.

Enter your netmask(s) in CIDR notation (/25) or dotted decimals (255.255.255.0). Inverse netmasks are recognized. If you omit the netmask ipcalc uses the default netmask for the class of your network.

This calculator returns a variety of information regarding Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) and IPv6 subnets including possible network addresses, usable host ranges, subnet mask, and IP class, among others. Look at the space between the bits of the addresses: The bits before it arethe network part of the address, the bits after it are the host part. You cansee two simple facts: In a network address all host bits are zero, in abroadcast address they are all set.

The class of your network is determined by its first bits.

If your network is a private internet according to RFC 1918 this is remarked. When displaying subnets the new bits in the network part of the netmask aremarked in a different color

The wildcard is the inversenetmask as used for access control lists in Cisco routers.

ABOUT SUBNET CALCULATOR. The subnet calculator lets you enter a subnet range (CIDR) and see IP address information about that range You can type your range directly in CIDR notation, or use the optional Mask pull-down. Ipcalc takes an IP address and netmask and calculates the resulting broadcast, network, Cisco wildcard mask, and host range. By giving a second netmask, you can design subnets and supernets. It is also intended to be a teaching tool and presents the subnetting results as easy-to-understand binary values.

Do you want to split your network into subnets? Enter the address and netmaskof your original network and play with the second netmask until the result matches your needs.

You can have all this fun at your shell prompt. Originally ipcalc was not intended for creating HTML and still works happily in /usr/local/bin/ :-)

💡 Description

SubNetCalc is an IPv4/IPv6 subnet address calculator. Forgiven IPv4 or IPv6 address and netmask or prefix length, itcalculates network address, broadcast address, maximumnumber of hosts and host address range. Also, it prints theaddresses in binary format for better understandability.Furthermore, it prints useful information on specificaddress types (e.g. type, scope, interface ID, etc.).

  • My host has IP 132.252.150.254 and netmask 255.255.255.240. What are the details of its network?

  • Consider host www.six.heise.de uses a 64-bit prefix length. What are the details of its network?

  • My new host should use Interface ID 0x100 and Subnet ID 0x1234. Generate a Unique Local IPv6 prefix (40-bit Global ID) for my intranet, using high-quality random numbers!

  • Which are DNS reverse lookup name and geo location country of IP 2401:3800:c001::68?
