- Create a new layer and call it 'Dodge'. As we did a moment ago with the Burn layer, copy the mask from the Brightness layer. You could also copy it from the Burn layer, as they have the same mask.
- Do gradients, linear and circular, before moving to the brush tool. And venture beyond the standard “exposure” or “brightness” slider when dodging and burning. Two extra points apply in Capture One that aren’t true of Lightroom. First, local adjustments require the use of Capture One’s layer capabilities, which are quite valuable.
Dodging and burning has been possible within Capture One Pro for over three years now, ever since the introduction of layers in version 11, but the capabilities of these layers have dramatically improved over time. Dodging and burning in Lightroom isn’t as easy or as accurate as in Photoshop, but if you don’t have Photoshop, there are still several dodge/burn options in Lightroom. The primary tools are the Adjustment Brush, the Radial Filter, and the Graduated Filter. Each one of these has a dodge or burn option built-in.
Simplify the creation of dodge and burn layers with a single click
The power of Capture One and its support for layers has grown tremendously over the years, which has allowed it to serve as a stand-alone photo editor without the need for Photoshop.
One of the most enduring and commonly used techniques for perfecting skin or adding depth and dimension to landscape and architecture images is Dodging and Burning. While support for Dodging and Burning within Capture One is good, it requires the creation of numerous layers which can be tedious and time consuming.
